Street Parking in Seattle Creates Stress and Uncertainty for Drivers
Street parking in busy areas of Downtown Seattle is challenging because drivers must interpret stacked signs filled with time restrictions, arrows, exceptions, and unclear rules. Instead of quickly knowing whether they can park, they often have to slow down, reread signs, and mentally combine multiple regulations under pressure.
Our research showed that this confusion creates stress, with some drivers spending 10 to 20 minutes looking for parking and others describing the experience as highly stressful. This revealed that the problem is not only parking availability, but also how parking information is communicated.
To address this, we designed Park Smart to translate complex parking rules into clear, real-time visual cues through digital street signs and mobile map guidance, helping drivers make faster and more confident parking decisions.

Solution
Real-Time Parking Guidance Across Physical and Mobile Touch Points

Displays a simple, consolidated view of real-time parking regulations
Helps drivers avoid the stress of interpreting multiple complex street parking signs.
Shows only the most relevant rule, such as free parking, paid parking, no parking, or loading zone.
Physical Digital Sign

Mobile App Feature
Adds real-time parking cues to the user’s navigation app.
Updates throughout the day based on current parking regulations.
